  293. 1972 -     Steve Harris graduates from Leyton County High School, Leytonstone,
  294.            London, England (on the East End).
  295. May 1976 - The words "Iron Maiden's...gonna get you...no matter how far" were
  296.            first uttered at the Cart & Horses Tavern at Maryland Point,
  297.            Stratford, England.  The first true gig for IRON MAIDEN!  :)
  298. '76/'77 -  Maiden establishes themselves on the East End London heavy metal
  299.            scene.
  300. Mid '77 -  Den Wilcock quits right before a gig at the Green Man Plumstead,
  301.            England.
  302. 12/31/78 - Paul Di'Anno's debut with IRON MAIDEN, at the Ruskin Arms, High
  303.            Street North, Manor Park, East London, England.
  304. 12/31/78 - The first 4 songs EP was recorded at Spacewood Studios in 
  305.            Cambridge, England.  The songs were:  Prowler, Invasion, Iron
  306.            Maiden, and Strange World.  Once the band returned with more money
  307.            to remix, etc., the studio had wiped the master clean, so the demo
  308.            tape (which eventually became the Soundhouse Tapes) was put onto
  309.            vinyl exactly as it was recorded that night.  It cost them about
  310.            $400 or so.  They didn't even have a place to stay, and actually
  311.            had to stay in the back of their van!
  312. Early 79 - First real press exposure for IRON MAIDEN.
  313. 02/02/79 - Maiden's equipment truck, equipment and all, were stolen, worth 
  314.            12,000 pounds altogether.  All of this was later recovered less
  315.            than a month later, and the 4 perpetrators were later charged with
  316.            stealing and burglary.  The main guy was named Ilkay Bayram, and
  317.            they were from Homerton, England.
  318. Early summer 79 - Rod Smallwood hooks up with Maiden as their manager.
  319. Summer '79 - Steve and rest of the band quit their regular jobs, since IRON
  320.              MAIDEN was really starting to take off full-time.
  321. 09/03/79 - Charity benefit concert at the Music Machine, London, England, 
  322.            supporting Motorhead (Motorhead was billed as Iron Fist And The
  323.            Hordes From Hell).
  324. 09/06/79 - Paul Di'Anno is arrested 5 minutes before Maiden goes on stage
  325.            at The Swan, Hammersmith, London, England.  He was charged with
  326.            concealing a weapon (a knife), and forced Maiden to go on as a
  327.            3-piece (Steve Harris, Dave Murray, Doug Sampson), playing a
  328.            largely instrumental set, with Steve Harris doing vocals.
  329. 10/03/79 - 10/04/79 - Free concerts played at The Swan, Hammersmith, London,
  330.                       England...trying to attract record labels.  Chrysalis
  331.                       records turned up, but couldn't make up their mind
  332.                       whether or not they were interested (tough shit for
  333.                       them, eh?!).
  334. 10/19/79 - First headline concert at The Marquee, London, England, with 
  335.            Praying Mantis and Ian Flemming.
  336. 10/24/79 - IRON MAIDEN first signs with EMI records.  (Paul Di'Anno of Ching-
  337.            ford, London; David Michael Murray of Clapton, London; Steve
  338.            Harris of Leytonstone, London; Doug Sampson of Walthamstow,
  339.            London; and Tony Parsons of Hertfordshire).
  340. 10/27/79 - IRON MAIDEN's first appearance on the cover of SOUNDS magazine.
  341. 11/01/79 - First gig in Scotland, Ruffles, Aberdeen, Scotland.
  342. 11/05/79 - Heavy Metal Bonfire Night Explosion at The Music Machine, London, 
  343.            England.
  344. 11/07/79 - Sign contract for BBC's Radio One "Friday Night Rock Show", to be
  345.            broadcast one week later.
  346. 11/09/79 - The Soundhouse Tapes EP was officially released (unmixed) on Rock
  347.            Hard Records (Maiden's own label).  Only 5,000 copies were ever
  348.            made.
  349. 11/14/79 - IRON MAIDEN made their debut on the BBC's Radio One "Friday Night
  350.            Rock Show."  They played Iron Maiden, Sanctuary, Transylvania, and
  351.            Running Free as a 4-piece (they had dropped guitarist Tony Parsons
  352.            by this time).
  353. 12/15/79 - Official announcement of IRON MAIDEN signing with EMI (in the
  354.            trade bible MUSIC WEEK).
  355. 12/19/79 - The IRON MAIDEN MEGABASH at The Music Machine, London, England.
  356.            This gig was complete with amps covered in cotton wool snow and
  357.            a headbanging Santa.
  358. End '79  - Maiden (Rod Smallwood) meets up with artist Derek Riggs.
  359. Early '80 - Recorded Running Free single (release in Feb '80), and the b-side
  360.             Burning Ambition (which is the only album that features Doug
  361.             Sampson on drums, and Dave Murray doing all the guitar work).
  362. 02/10/80 - Maiden meets up with famed photographer Ross Halfin, after he
  363.            takes in their show in support of the Metal For Muthas album, at
  364.            the London Lyceum, England.
  365. 02/15/80 - Metal For Muthas compilation released.
  366. 02/15/80 - First single, Running Free b/w Burning Ambition, is released.  It
  367.            goes to #44 in the first week of its release.  It peaked at #34
  368.            (in the UK) at the beginning of March.
  369. Feb '80  - IRON MAIDEN first plays LIVE on Britain's TOP OF THE POPS, the
  370.            first band ever to do so (at the time), other than THE WHO in
  371.            1972.
  372. 03/15/80 - First Headline Performance at the Hammersmith Odeon, England (on
  373.            the Judas Priest tour).  They got to play about a 45 minute set
  374.            for each gig on the tour.
  375. 04/05/80 - Kotrijk Festival, Belgium.  The IRON MAIDEN Head (the forerunner
  376.            to Eddie) was blown off the stage and into the crowd (instead of
  377.            just shooting smoke like it was supposed to have).  One crazed fan
  378.            gave up his job to follow Maiden around Europe for 2 months!
  379.            Also, Maiden's first gig outside of the United Kingdom.
  380. 04/10/80 - Gig at Central Hall, Grimsby, England.  Paul's voice was going
  381.            out and was so rough, the band stormed through an instrumental
  382.            set and told the audience they'd be back in October to do another
  383.            concert (with vox) and they were!
  384. 04/11/80 - Debut album IRON MAIDEN is released, and smashes into the UK chart
  385.            at #4, going silver within the first month of its release.  The
  386.            song "Sanctuary" also appeared on the US release.
  387. May '80  - Some people become irked at the cover of the upcoming single
  388.            Sanctuary, as it depicts Eddie hovering with a knife over a dead
  389.            Margaret Thatcher.
  390. 05/16/80 - Sanctuary single, b/w Drifter and I've Got The Fire (both live),

  396.              (the main driver/roadie guy) and others dragged him out of bed

  401. 07/03/80 - 07/05/80 - Maiden packs the Marquee, London, England.  They are
  402.                       filmed by ITV for an edition of Twentieth Century Box
  403.                       that was screened on 08/17/80.  This was a special "New
  404.                       Wave Metal" probe (only after a year on the music
  405.                       press), which majored on Maiden.
  406. 08/18/80 - Maiden signs contract with Kiss to open for them on concerts over
  407.            the next 2 months.
  408. 08/17/80 - Marquee Club in London performance aired on Twentieth Century Box.
  409. 08/23/80 - First performance at the annual Reading Festival.

  431.            was none other than Phil Collen, now of Def Leppard fame.
  432. Oct '80  - Women In Uniform b/w Invasion single is released.  It reached #35
  433.            on the UK charts.  Because of the cover, the Margaret Thatcher
  434.            one, this original cover was later issued as a covered sleeve, so
  435.            the original one is much rarer now.
  436. Nov '80  - Maiden got offered TOP OF THE POPS again, and again did it live,
  437.            but it turned out to backfire...the sound levels were really
  438.            shitty, and they weren't allowed to play at full volume, and also
  439.            weren't allowed to have Eddie on stage (due to the 'family
  440.            programming nature of the show).  :)
  441. Nov '80  - A video is made for Women In Uniform.  This was before the MTV
  442.            explosion (which began in summer 1981 I think, and MTV Europe even
  443.            later).  This was pretty much the first video made for a rock
  444.            band ever at the time, except for Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody.
  445.            How's that for trend-setters?!
  446. Nov '80  - Maiden records KILLERS, with Martin Birch at the producing helm.
  447. 11/21/80 - Adrian Smith's first gig at Brunel University, Uxbridge (so that
  448.            the new lineup wouldn't go into the studio to record KILLERS in
  449.            a 'virginal' state).
  450. 12/21/80 - Gig taped at Rainbow Theatre, London, England.  Due to technical
  451.            difficulties, half of the set had to be played a *2nd* time!
  452.            Actually, one of the sound lines went down about halfway through
  453.            the show, so such classics as IRON MAIDEN and Phantom Of The Opera
  454.            weren't gotten the first time around.  2+ hours of Maiden
  455.            altogether though!  This Delta Production directed by Dave Hillier
  456.            came out as a half hour live EMI video in March 1981.
  457. 02/02/81 - 2nd album KILLERS is released.  It reached #2 in the UK.  Also, it
  458.            reached the top 60 on the Billboard charts, and stayed in the
  459.            chart for 17 weeks.  It reached sales of 200,000 sales (four times
  460.            the sales of IRON MAIDEN) at the time.  The song "Women In
  461.            Uniform" also appeared on the Australian release.
  462. 02/09/81 - Review in SOUNDS magazine deems Killers album as 'mediocre' and
  463.            a definite flop...and that Maiden wouldn't go far.  What suckers!
  464. 02/17/81 - Beginning of Killers tour in Ipswich, Gaumont, England.  Maiden
  465.            played 125 gigs in 6 months across Europe, Japan, Australia and
  466.            North America, taking in 15 countries and headlining everywhere
  467.            except the USA where, like Japan, the band was making their first
  468.            visit ever.
  469. Feb '81 -  All 3 concerts in Japan for May '81 were sold out in less than
  470.            2 hours.
  471. First week of Mar '81 - Twilight Zone b/w Wrathchild single released.  It
  472.                         reached #31 on the UK charts.
  473. 05/21/81 - First gig in Japan (Killers Japan Tour), Kosei Nenkin Hall, Tokyo, 
  474.            Japan.
  475. 05/23/81 - Gig at Kosei Nenkin Hall, Nagoya, Japan.  The MAIDEN JAPAN E.P.
  476.            (aka "HEAVY METAL ARMY" E.P.) was recorded here.  Mixed at Nimbus
  477.            9, Toronto.  Produced and mixed by IRON MAIDEN and Doug Hall.
  478. 06/03/81 - First American gig (Killers US and Canada Tour), Aladdin Hotel, 
  479.            Las Vegas, NV.
  480. 06/15/81 - Purgatory b/w Genghis Khan single released.  It eventually got to
  481.            #52 on the UK charts, which was (at least until '88) the band's
  482.            least sucessful British single ever.  The original cover design
  483.            for this signle was actually held over for a year, and eventually
  484.            used as the cover for THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST album.
  485. 06/21/81 - First Canadian gig, first gig in Ontario (Killers US and Canada 
  486.            Tour), Concert Hall, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.  They headlined the
  487.            1,500 seater here.
  488. 06/22/81 - First gig in Quebec (Killers US and Canada Tour), Le Club, 
  489.            Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
  490. 09/06/81 - First gig in Yugoslavia (Killers Europe Tour), Belgrade, 
  491.            Yugoslavia.
  492. Sep '81  - Paul Di'Anno quits Maiden, and in comes Bruce Bruce/Air Raid Siren
  493.            Dickinson (from Samson).  Steve Harris went right to Bruce for the
  494.            audition.  Bruce was to have learned 6 songs...instead he learned
  495.            15.  Due to legal problems with the collapse of Samson's record
  496.            label GEM Records, Bruce was actually supposedly prohibited by law
  497.            in actually writing songs for Maiden for the first year.  This is
  498.            why the first songwriting credit Bruce gets is on PIECE OF MIND,
  499.            1983 with "Revelations", and shares credits on "Flight Of Icarus",
  500.            "Die With Your Boots On", and "Sun And Steel".
  501. 10/26/81 - Bruce's first gig (the first in a series of "break-in" gigs in
  502.            Italy over 5 days) in Palasport, Bologna, Italy.  All the gigs
  503.            were sold out.
  504. 11/15/81 - Bruce's first concert in the UK, at the Rainbow Theatre, London, 
  505.            England.
  506. Nov '81  - The MAIDEN JAPAN E.P. is released, and climbed as high as #43 on
  507.            the UK charts.  The US and Brazilian releases had an extra 5th
  508.            track, "Wrathchild".
  509. 12/23/81 - Maiden plays at the Ruskin Arms, London, England, under the name
  510.            Genghis Khan.  This is also Dave Murray's birthday, so he gets
  511.            the pies in the face (a tradition for the band) on stage.
  512. End '81  - KILLERS had crashed into every major album market in the world,
  513.            going top 10 in the UK, France, Germany, Japan, Sweden, and
  514.            Belgium, and going Top 80 in the USA.  In the process it had gone
  515.            gold in Britain, Canada, and Japan, and double-gold in France.
  516. Feb '82  - The NUMBER OF THE BEAST is recorded (having been written over Dec
  517.            '81 and Jan '82).  All kinds of weird shit started happening to
  518.            them during these sessions:  lights started going on and off in
  519.            the studio of their own accord, the recording equipment myster-
  520.            iously broke down, things were going 'bump' in the night, specif-
  521.            ically the band's gear which began emitting creaks, groans, and
  522.            other strange noises; Martin Birch (the albums's producer) crashed
  523.            his car on the way to the studio one night, into another driver (a
  524.            religious type), and the bill for damages was 666 pounds (he ended
  525.            up paying 667).  They originally gave themselves 6 weeks to record
  526.            it, but it ended up only taking about 3 1/2.
  527. 02/25/82 - Beginning of the Beast On The Road tour, Dunstable, England.  This
  528.            tour upped teh ante to 18 countries and an incredible 180 shows.
  529. 03/16/82 - During the gig at City Hall, Newcastle, England, the video for
  530.            the "Run To The Hills" single is filmed.
  531. 03/22/82 - THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST album is released.  The album smashed into
  532.            the UK charts at #1 (and stayed there for the 2nd week as well),
  533.            and went on to surpass the sales of KILLERS everywhere.  It also
  534.            reached #33 on the Billboard charts, strutting around the Top 100
  535.            for over 8 months, and clocking up sales of well over 350,000 in
  536.            the process (which meant worldwide the band had over-taken '81's
  537.            impressive sales of over one million as early as summer of '82!)
  538.            It also went top ten in Canada, going platinum in the process.
  539.            British fans also voted it the #2 Metal LP of all time in KERRANG
  540.            magazine less than 2 years later (PIECE OF MIND was #1).  The
  541.            Japanese also included the song "Total Eclipse".
  542. Mar '82  - Run To The Hills b/w Total Eclipse single released.  It eventually
  543.            reached #7 on the UK charts, their first ever top ten single
  544.            (despite their lack of radio air play).  The video the band did
  545.            for it with David Mallett featured Maiden live footage inter-
  546.            spersed with comic extracts from an old Buster Keaton movie,
  547.            though Buster himself couldn't be shown for copyright reasons.  It
  548.            made TOP OF THE POPS when the single went top ten, and the newly
  549.            emergent MTV (which began June? 1981) showed it, too.
  550. Mar? '82 - During the middle of the Beast On The Road tour, and with Run To
  551.            The Hills in the top ten, Maiden appears on TISWAS, the classic
  552.            Saturday morning TV slapstick show for kids of all ages - where
  553.            not even the threat of Eddie could deter the kids from throwing
  554.            creme pies at Maiden.
  555. 03/24/82 - Maiden re-visits Paris, France.  5,000 fans decided that wrecking
  556.            the Metro was the best way of celebrating a Maiden night out, and
  557.            that venue (which one?) has been closed to rock ever since.
  558. 04/02/82 - First gig in Spain (Beast On The Road Tour), Barcelona, Spain.
  559.            Though these were the first gigs in Spain, it didn't stop them
  560.            from selling out all 3 of the 8,000 capacity gigs they played.
  561. Apr '82  - Another first, following THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST's triumphant
  562.            reign at the top of the charts - the NME asked for an inteview.
  563.            The NME was and remains completely anti-rock, so Maiden agreed to
  564.            do the interview as long as it was solely on their terms, i.e.,
  565.            printed in a question and answer format (so as to stop them from
  566.            mis-quoting and misleading), and that they got the front page.
  567.            NME eventually reluctantly agreed, and sent forth their most
  568.            notorious interviewer Paul Morley to interview them (he got pretty
  569.            drunk during the interview as well).  Morley didn't give Harris
  570.            and Dickinson credit for being brighter than he though, so he
  571.            couldn't really 'take them down' in the interview, and eventually
  572.            Eddie himself appeared on the front page.
  573. Mid Apr '82 - During the European leg of the Beast On The Road Tour, Bruce
  574.               picks up a chest infection, and 3 dates on the French Riveria
  575.               had to be pulled.
  576. Spring '82 - (The Beast On The Road Tour) - this is the tour that Maiden
  577.              decided to do something to curb the pirate merchandisers who
  578.              habitually plagued rodck gigs.  They actually got pretty firm
  579.              about this stuff, even getting a few people arrested and
  580.              charged, since their phony merchandise was always of a pretty
  581.              cheesy quality.
  582. 05/10/82 - The Number Of The Beast b/w Remember Tomorrow single is released
  583.            in the UK.  It went top 20, and the video featured ballroom
  584.            dancers waltzing merrily with '666' on their backs.  The big Eddie
  585.            (the 12 foot tall one) made his first appearnce on the Beast On
  586.            The Road tour, but even though Eddie made an appearance in the
  587.            video, he was edited out by MTV after viewers complained that he
  588.            was scaring them too much.
  589. 05/11/82 - First American Performance for Beast On The Road Tour, Flint, MI
  590.            (supporting Rainbow for 3 weeks, then .38 Special in the south
  591.            for several gigs).  Bruce bangs his head around so much here that
  592.            for another month or so afterwards he has to sport a movement-
  593.            restricting surgical collar.  After the injury time passed in
  594.            agony with Bruce passing through the mitts of various US quacks
  595.            who prescribed a frightening array of downers (one even prescribed
  596.            horse tranquilizers) to deaden the pain, while one who charged
  597.            $150 for a 20 minute consultation recommended surgery!  He
  598.            eventually got everything taken care of at a chiropractor's
  599.            office.
  600. 06/11/82 - Maiden opens for .38 Special in Memphis, TN, on Donnie Van Zant's
  601.            birthday (supposedly one of the more memorable gigs/nights on the
  602.            tour).
  603. 06/19/82 - First gig in Norman, OK.  This was the last night of that stretch
  604.            of the Beast On The Road Tour (they continued on in Canada a few
  605.            days later), and Adrian Smith got drunk as a skunk (hence, the
  606.            apperance of his drunk alter-ego "Melvin") and barely made the
  607.            plane, thanks to Dave Murray and a full bottle of Chivas Regal
  608.            liquor!
  609. 06/25/82 - First Canadian Headline Performance in Quebec City, Quebec, 
  610.            Canada.  9,000 people showed up!
  611. 06/29/82 - First American Headline Performance (Beast On The Road Tour), The
  612.            Palladium, New York, NY.  It was a sell-out performance, marred
  613.            only by one asshole 'fan' hurling a firework on stage, hitting
  614.            Dave Murray's guitar roadie Bill Barclay in head and almost
  615.            blinding him.  Apparently the kid who did it was given a severe
  616.            kicking by other fans after the gig, so justice was done!  The
  617.            advertisements for the Palladium show included a picture of Eddie
  618.            holding aloft the bitten-off head of Ozzy Osbourne (who the year
  619.            before had outraged most of America by biting off the head of a
  620.            dove, followed closely by biting the wing off a pigeion and then
  621.            by chewing on a bat's head.).  The press release at the time
  622.            explained that Eddie was a great friends of bats in general, and
  623.            had decided to avenge Ozzy's latest outrage.  Unbelievably Ozzy's
  624.            label boss Don Arden called up Rod Smallwood and said he thought
  625.            the Maiden ad was in "bad taste", and asked them to withdraw the
  626.            picture, so they did.
  627. 07/20/82 - First gig in British Columbia (Beast On The Road Tour), Victoria, 
  628.            British Columbia, Canada.
  629. 07/23/82 - First gig in Alberta (Beast On The Road Tour), Edmonton, Alberta, 
  630.            Canada.
  631. 07/26/82 - First gig in Saskatchewan (Beast On The Road Tour), Regina, 
  632.            Saskatchewan, Canada.
  633. 07/27/82 - First gig in Manitoba (Beast On The Road Tour), Winnipeg,

  635. Jul '82  - Eddie-fever really starts catching on in the US.  In New York he
  636.            was swinging off the Empire State building with a conquered King
  637.            Kong in his mitts.  In California he was rinding a shark surf-
  638.            board style.  In Texas he was depicted gnawing on an armadillo in
  639.            the desert.
  640. Jul '82  - Maiden were special guests of the Scorpions.
  641. Summer '82 - Maiden becomes a focus of people like the Moral Majority and
  642.              the God Squad in Arkansas, who wanted the album to carry
  643.              stickers warning of their eveil satanic nature.  This was only
  644.              the first...
  645. 08/10/82 - Gig in Beaumont, TX.  The night before, Bruce walks into a bar
  646.            with some pretty short shorts, showing off his stocky hairball
  647.            legs and red and white socks.  The bar manager deemed them
  648.            "offensive" (even though he had worn them the night before), so
  649.            Bruce left and came back a few minutes later with a T-shirt that
  650.            said "FUCK" on the front of it, and jean cut-offs, cut off just
  651.            under the bottoms of those same shorts.  Nobody said a thing.
  652. 08/11/82 - Gig at Corpus Christi, TX, a very solid set.  They drag Ross
  653.            Halfin (photographer) up on stage and strip him naked in front of
  654.            8,000+ people who count to 30.  The rest band gets him backstage
  655.            and get some naked photos of him taking a shower (revenge), and
  656.            get them distributed to record companies all over London.
  657. 08/28/82 - Another performance at the annual Reading Festival.  For this
  658.            Maiden had to make a round trip of about 12,000 miles (from El
  659.            Paso, TX to London to Los Angeles, CA), all for one gig!  They
  660.            had a couple of warm-up gigs a few days before the big night, but
  661.            Bruce was still "petrified with fear" right before the Reading
  662.            gig.  They almost didn't make it on the flight there okay, since
  663.            Bruce and Dave Lights opted to take 3 of those horse tranquilizers
  664.            and didn't wake up properly for days.  Also, Bruce was so nervous
  665.            36 hours before the gig, he actually had lost his voice totally,
  666.            and was worried about the gig going on at all!  The gig for the
  667.            band wasn't without incident either.  At first all the band could
  668.            hear was Steve's bass, then that cut out completely so Steve
  669.            panicked.  Dave Murray was playing with one ear stuck inside his
  670.            guitar cabinets; Adrian Smith was wandering around looking
  671.            bewildered.  But apparently the crowd really didn't notice, and
  672.            all was cool.  Bruce was said to have al his usual leaps on and
  673.            off the amps, the Number Of The Beast came complete with horror
  674.            clips on the video screen, and the show ended with a series of
  675.            protracted encores, witnessing both the time-honored 'yo yo yo'
  676.            routine (half stolen from the Police, from which it was stolen
  677.            originally by Paul Di'Anno) with the audience, and the arrival
  678.            on-stage of Ricky Medlocke from Blackfoot to jam with them.
  679.            Incidentally, they supposedly always (to this day) get *really*
  680.            nervous before special gigs like this, and huge ones like Monsters
  681.            Of Rock, etc.
  682. Aug/Sep '82 - Maiden opened 2 festival bills with Foreigner, Loverboy and the
  683.               Scorpions, the Oakland gig and the Anaheim one saw them playing
  684.               to 57,000 and 75,000 people respectively!
  685. 09/11/82 - 09/12/82 - Maiden opens for the Scorpions in Portland, OR.  It
  686.                       was apparently pretty wild and wacky.  The Scorpions
  687.                       struck first, handcuffing Bruce's hands behind his back
  688.                       during Drifter, which left him trying to get the crowd
  689.                       clapping without the use of his hands.  At the end of
  690.                       the Scorpions' set, they go to leave the stage, at
  691.                       which point Maiden comes out dressed up with towels on
  692.                       their heads, and forks over their eyes in the manner of
  693.                       the Scorpions "Blackout" LP sleeve.
  694. 09/21/82 - Dave Murray throws his guitar into the crowd at a free festival in
  695.            Chicago, IL.  Of course, he forgot to take his lead out, and it
  696.            hit a guy in the back and it cost $50 to make sure he was okay.
  697. 10/02/82 - Sold out gig at Madison Square Garden, New York, NY, as special
  698.            guests of Judas Priest.  This occurred 3 years to the very date
  699.            of their gig at the Hammersmith Swan in London where they first
  700.            invited record company A&R men along.
  701. End of Oct '80 - Maiden vacations in Honolulu for 8 days, and freeze their
  702.                  asses off in the rain.
  703. 11/07/82 - First gig in Australia (Beast On The Road Tour), Sydney, 
  704.            Australia.  Maiden was the first big foreign rock band to play
  705.            there down under since Rainbow in 1976.  THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST
  706.            album went top ten, selling 80,000 copies in the process (which
  707.            was 27 times as many as KILLERS had sold there) and went platinum.
  708. Nov/Dec '82 - Sold out concerts in Japan (their return).  They got another
  709.               gold album there.
  710. Dec '82  - Clive Burr quits IRON MAIDEN.
  711. 01/08/83 - IRON MAIDEN begins recording Piece Of Mind in Jersey in the
  712.            Chanel Islands (they took over a hotel called Le Chalet for 5
  713.            weeks).
  714. 04/11/83 - Flight Of Icarus b/w I've Got The Fire single is released.  Not
  715.            too successful in America (it was Maiden's first single released
  716.            there).  It was thereafter pretty much viewed as a mistake to
  717.            release it there.  It was the first single released in Britain in
  718.            over a year, and reached #11 on the UK charts.  The video for this
  719.            single was recorded at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas (Nicko
  720.            is the 'hooded character' in the video, with a mouth full of
  721.            strawberry jam that dribbles out of his mouth).  As he was doing
  722.            it, there was a huge electric storm, and they tried to catch it
  723.            on film with lightning in the background, and jam dripping down
  724.            his mouth for half an hour (but of course it didn't work!).
  725. 05/16/83 - PIECE OF MIND was released.  Maybe because of fears that the band
  726.            was 'softening up', the album entered the UK charts at #3 (instead
  727.            of #1).  British fans voted it Number One Metal LP of all time in
  728.            KERRANG magazine less than a year later.  PIECE OF MIND was USA's
  729.            biggest release by a long shot (at the time) - it entered the
  730.            Billboard charts at #127 on 06/02/83, and leaped an incredible
  731.            92 positions to #35.  By its 8th week of release it had reached
  732.            #15, where it stayed for 5 weeks, and 3 months into the tour, it
  733.            had made #14.  It went gold after 10 weeks, stayed in the charts
  734.            for an incredible 43 weeks, and even got THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST
  735.            back into the charts and also going gold, getting as high as #79
  736.            on its 2nd lease on life.  In the US, a picture disc was also
  737.            released, which contained "Cross-Eyed Mary" as a bonus track.
  738. 05/25/83 - 05/28/83 - IRON MAIDEN plays at the Odeon, Hammersmith, London,
  739.                       England for 4 straight powerful nights, the first time
  740.                       they had done multiple nights there!  By this time,
  741.                       Adrian Smith's trousers has still only been washed once
  742.                       since the beginning of the tour (since May 2nd)!
  743. 06/01/83 - First gig in Finland (World Piece Tour), Helsinki Ice Hall
  744.            (Jaahalli), Helsinki, Finland. The Ice Hall is incorrectly
  745.            called "Ishallen" in some places. I am told that "Ishallen" is
  746.            Swedish, whereas "Jaahalli" is the proper Finnish name :)
  747. 06/10/83 - First gig in Luxembourg (World Piece Tour), Schifflance Luxemburg 
  748.            Hall Polyvalent, Luxembourg.
  749. 06/20/83 - The Trooper b/w Cross-Eyed Mary single is released.  It made the
  750.            British top 20 once again
  751. 06/21/83 - The USA/Canada leg of the World Piece Tour begin in Casper, WY.
  752.            This was their first full headline tour of the USA and Canada.
  753. 08/15/83 - Concert at Memorial Stadium in Buffalo, NY.  A lawsuit stemmed 
  754.            from this concert where some girl was doing sensual dancing on
  755.            stage.  I'm not sure of the outcome of this (somebody wanna
  756.            check?!).  See section 9 of the FAQ for more on this.
  757. 08/18/83 - Maiden plays Allentown, PA.  The song "Mission From 'Arry" was
  758.            recorded post-gig this night.  Seems that during the beginning
  759.            of Nicko's drum solo, Steve's bass quit, so he told a roadie
  760.            ("Bill"), to go and tell Nicko to try and extend his solo.
  761.            Trouble was, the guy wasn't his drum roadie and didn't really
  762.            know how to go about telling him, so he ended up waving his arms
  763.            like a demented windmill and trying to yell over the noise.  All
  764.            that happened was that Nicko missed the message but got distracted
  765.            enough to mess up his solo.  After the gig, he clocked the guy,
  766.            which prompted a huge 1/2 hour long argument between him and
  767.            Steve.  After most of that was over, Bruce went in with his
  768.            Walkman, and started stirring it up again.  Steve spotted the
  769.            Walkman and said "some cunt's recording this", whereupon Nicko
  770.            went to jump on the Walkman and smash it.  Fine, except Bruce
  771.            had a bunch of ideas and lyrics on the other side of the cassette
  772.            for Powerslave, so he intercepted and clocked Nicko one.  Now
  773.            you'll see this as a b-side to 2 Minutes To Midnight, with writing
  774.            credits to "Harris/McBrain, and engineered by Bruce Dickinson."
  775. 09/05/83 - Concert at Kingswood Music Theatre, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
  776.            Rod was in his hotel room the night before and heard on the radio
  777.            that there was gonna be an Italian wine-tasting festival in the
  778.            park, and that IRON MAIDEN fans had to go through the back door
  779.            and miss out on the chance to use the fun fair beforehand (a ben-
  780.            efit which is normally included in the ticket price).  Fuming
  781.            that their fans were being treated as 2nd class citizens (it
  782.            turned out that Culture Club fans the day before had been allowed
  783.            to go through the front despite the wine festival being on then,
  784.            too) - Rod got his record company guy out of bed, and by 3am they
  785.            had tracked down the promoter, who was told in no uncertain terms
  786.            that if Maiden fans had to go through the back door, the band
  787.            wouldn't play.  Of course, the promoter hastily changed his tune
  788.            quickly thereafter.
  789. 10/04/83 - Maiden plays at Baltimore, MD (15,000 sell-out).
  790. 10/08/83 - Maiden plays in Madison Square Garden, New York, NY (sells out 
  791.            18,000 seats in less than a week).  The T-shirt for this was
  792.            pretty cool apparently, with a lobotomized Statue of Liberty on
  793.            the front with the Trooper design looming in the background, and
  794.            a lobotomized Madison Square Garden on the back, with the brain
  795.            peeking out from the Gardens top.
  796. 10/15/83 - 10/16/83 - Maiden's first gigs in Florida, in Jacksonville and
  797.            Lakeland.  But they still sold out both of them!
  798. 12/18/83 - Maiden kills Eddie on stage at the Westfalenhalle, Dortmund ZDF 
  799.            Festival, Dortmund, Germany (with other metal greats Ozzy
  800.            Osbourne, Judas Priest, the Scorpions, Def Leppard, Quiet Riot,
  801.            MSG, and Krokus).
  802. 12/29/83 - Steve marries his longtime girlfriend Lorraine (His first kid,
  803.            Lauren, was born very shortly after their marriage (can we say
  804.            "shotgun wedding?!" I think).  He now has (at least) 3 girls
  805.            altogether, that I know of).
  806. Summer '84 - Rehearsals for the World Slavery Tour in Hanover.
  807. 08/06/84 - 2 Minutes To Midnight b/w Rainbow's Gold (another good Nicko drum
  808.            feature!) single is released.  It got in the top ten on the UK

  810. 08/09/84 - 08/19/84 - Behind The Iron Curtain/World Slavery Tour.
  811. 08/09/84 - First gig in Poland (World Slavery Tour), Torwar Sports Hall, 
  812.            Warsaw, Poland.  No Western band had ever done a full show there
  813.            before.  At this gig there were 14,000 frantic fans inside, and
  814.            another 5,000 locked out!  The World Slavery Tour ended up going
  815.            through 24 different countries in about 11 1/2 months.
  816. 08/16/84 - First gig in Austria (World Slavery Tour), Aichfeldhall 
  817.            Sportzentrum, Vienna, Austria.
  818. 08/17/84 - First gig in Hungary (World Slavery Tour), Budapest Sports Hall, 
  819.            Budapest, Hungary.  This was a 38,000-strong festival - the

  2354. What happens when the Madness of Metal meets the insanity of illusion?

  2356. "Raising Hell ", the most macabre musical event of all time, will take place
  2357. at a secret London venue on 28th August, when metal monsters Iron Maiden and
  2358. horror illusionist Simon Drake will combine for a very unique 90-minute
  2359. TV extravaganza.

  2361. "Raising Hell " will be beamed live on satellite to pay-per-view cable in
  2362. the USA and will also be broadcast on TV in most parts of the world. Full
  2363. details of the worldwide broadcast schedule will be announced shortly, but
  2364. will include England, Europe, Japan, Mexico and Brazil. The studio audience
  2365. will consist of contest winners from various parts of the world, combined
  2366. with members of the Iron Maiden Fan Club.

  2368. The concert marks the last Maiden appearance of Bruce Dickinson, the band
  2369. vocalist for the last eleven years. To allow Bruce to go out in style, Maiden
  2370. have teamed up with master illusionist Simon Drake to put together the most
  2371. vibrant and horrifying rock show ever staged. Appearing on specially designed
  2372. staging reminiscent of a cross between Blade Runner and Dante's inferno,
  2373. Maiden will pound out a set featuring classic cuts from their illustrious
  2374. history, from "Number of the Beast", "The Trooper" and "Run to the Hills",
  2375. through to current classics like "Fear of the Dark" and "Be Quick or Be
  2376. Dead".

  2378. Integrated into the live set will be horrifying illusions of Simon Drake.
  2379. Renowned for his past work with the cult programme "Secret Cabaret", Simon
  2380. is at the cutting edge of modern-day illusions and the dark magic arts.
  2381. Very much in the vein of metal and horror, Simon combines the extremes of
  2382. gruesome illusion with anarchic, highly individual magical skills. Besides
  2383. appearing during the band's set, Simon also threatens to implicate the band
  2384. in some of his most extreme concepts. He especially promises a fitting
  2385. finale for Bruce-possibly with the aid of Eddie-at the end of the gig.

  2398. people on this very net have a literal abundance of concerts on tape, CD,
  2399. or even video.  Another place is to check local record dealers, especially
  2400. the 'college-type' ones, ones with imports, etc.  Then go to specific bootleg
  2401. dealers, like Goldmine, etc.

  2403. Via internet there are a few things you might want to check out.  The first
  2404. is a Bootleg Music server, which will tell you all kinds of information,
  2405. from 'what is a bootleg' and other bootleg FAQs, to what the music server has
  2406. available, and will even allow you to add yours to the list.

  2416. (about 18K) is also available via ftp from cs.uwp.edu (I can't remember
